AHS Orchestra – Final IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest Info

FINAL INFORMATION
IHSA SOLO & ENSEMBLE CONTEST
SATURDAY, MARCH 7
Alton High School

Contest starts at 8:30am.  We need all students’ help right after school Friday, March 6  until about 5:00 as well as throughout the day Saturday, starting at 7:30 a.m.   Sign up on lists will be posted in the band, orchestra and chorus rooms. Report to the Contest Office (Library) Saturday to sign and get your assignment

You will not have access to the orchestra room from 8:20 – 11:30 a.m.

*Do you have the original copies of music for the judge?

*Are your measures numbered?

Soloists, are your scales prepared?

Instrumental:  memorized 3 octave scales (2 octave for bass):  F, C, G, D, A, & E Major (the judge will ask for two of these)

Piano:  memorized 2 octave scales, 2 hands:  F, G, D, A, E, & B Major (the judge will ask for three of these)

Dress appropriately.  NO jeans for performances.  You may want to bring a change of clothes if you’re helping to work contest.  Wear an AHS Orchestra or AHS shirt.

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time and be ready to perform.   Wait for your accompanist at your contest room. 

If you have a schedule conflict, allow others in the room to perform before you.

Please thank and pay your accompanist.

Eat a healthy breakfast. 

Warm up will be in the gym only.  Please do not play in the hallways outside of contest rooms, stairwells or other parts of the building.

No food or drink is allowed in the gym, hallways, or contest rooms.

Please stay and help with contest.  See me or Mrs. Overmann in the contest office (library)

Everything takes place in the music suite and on the 1st and 2nd floors of our B-building.

ABOB is selling donuts, lunch, snacks and drinks in the Commons.  Bring money for food.

First Floor

Gym:  Homeroom and Warm-up

Auditorium (percussion)

All band and piano events.

Second floor

All vocal and string events

The library is Contest Headquarters.

Please be courteous during contest performances. 

Your cell phones should be turned off during your performances. 

Audience members may use cell phones or other electronic devices to record performances. 

Keep a close watch on all valuables or leave them at home. 

IHSA and Alton H.S. are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items. 

IHSA contest ranking is very different from IGSMA.  You are NOT to be upset or disappointed if you get a II or III place rating.

         I – Superior performance – outstanding in nearly every detail.
         II – Excellent performance – minor defects
         III – Good performance – lacking finesse and/or interpretation
         IV – Fair performance – basic weaknesses
         V – Poor performance – unsatisfactory

Remember you are ambassadors of Alton H.S.  Be very helpful and courteous to all of our guests throughout the day Saturday.
