Band Update – 1/17/17

Hello! Here’s our week:

  • Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18 – from 4-8pm – ABOB Dine Out night at the Homer Adams McDonald’s. No need for a flyer, just dine in or drive thru McDonald’s during that time period!
  • Thursday, January 19 – Pep Band at AHS Wrestling Senior Night. Easy extra credit for all band kids! We’ll meet at 5pm, wrestling match starts at 6. I’m thinking we’ll be done by 8 easily!
  • Friday, January 20 & Saturday, January 21 – SIUE Bi-State Festival. Those participating have received information – let us know if you have any questions.

Looking ahead to next week:

  • Monday, January 23 – Dinner Auction Invitation/Envelope Stuffing – 6pm, AHS Band Room
    • ABOB Meeting, 7pm, AHS Band Room
    • Monday Night Percussion starts as well! Percussion students received an email, but
Percussion Orchestra will be 5:00-6:30 pm and Battery Ensemble 6:30-8:00 every Monday Night.
All percussion students are required  to participate in at least one of the ensembles. They can perform in both if they choose to do so.
  • Tuesday, January 24 – RESCHEDULED Gray Pep Band Game. 6:45pm, AHS. This is the Alton/Edwardsville Game that was cancelled last Friday evening. Please mark your calendars!

Other future happenings:

  • It is time to start thinking about the Nashville Trip!!! I have an email in to MTC, but just a couple of things to know:
    • The calendar funds have just recently been sent. They should be in trip accounts by the end of next week. Thanks for your patience!
    • I do not have a final trip cost just yet. I’ve been telling folks to plan on $500, but it should be just under that.
  • Our Third Quarter Scale Check Off Assignment & Third Quarter Playing Test Chunks have been posted in Google Classroom – the scales are concert Eb, Gb (F#), A, and A chromatic. Scale recordings are due March 3. Please encourage that they get it done early!!! (They could record and submit this week!)
  • We have been talking a lot about IHSA Solo & Ensemble in class. Here’s what you need to know:
    • Who: All students in Wind Symphony & Symphonic Band, select Concert Band students
    • What: IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest (small groups/solos play for comments/rating from judges)
    • When: Saturday, March 4, 2017
    • Where: Alton High School
  • All students in Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will play in their choir (large group). Schedule will be announced about two weeks before.
  • Students are encouraged to take a solo and/or a smaller ensemble with friends. It’s a great opportunity for students to play in front of an audience (helps with nerves!) and to receive comments from someone who knows/plays their instrument.
    • Students who take a Solo will be excused from writing a Fine Arts Critique this semester. However some things to think about:
      • Solos are $8 to enter
      • Solos require piano accompaniment – it is the student’s responsibility to find an accompanist (we do have a list of qualified folks) and to pay their accompanist – usually around $25.
      • This is a time commitment! Students are expected to perform to the best of their abilities so they are not wasting their accompanist or the judge’s time. This will require at home practice and before/after school rehearsals with their accompanist.
  • If your student is interested in taking a solo or ensemble, the information form is located on Google Classroom. We must know by this Friday, January 20!
  • Pep Band (Redbird Rhythm) info –  All band students are involved in pep band – we divide the bands up into two groups, a Red Band and a Gray Band. The groups are posted in the band room. Here is the schedule:
    • Games: Red Band:
      • Friday, 2/3 – 6:45pm
      • Tuesday, 2/21 – 6:45pm
    • Games: Gray Band:
      • RESCHEDULED to Tuesday, January 24, 6:45pm
      • Friday, 2/10 – 6:45pm
      • Friday, 2/24 – 6:45pm

*Please note* Students cannot stay after school until their game time – they must leave and then come back. Also, we will always be done around 8:30/8:45 (after halftime). If your student isn’t attending the rest of the game, please be prompt in picking them up! Thanks.

Pep Band is a graded activity (25 points for each game/rehearsal). Students who may need to miss a game can attend the other band’s game for extra credit – any extra game a student attends is worth 25 extra credit points.

  • I sent an email out to those who have not yet paid the $50 Band Fees for this year. If you paid them at registration, that was for last year (2015)’s fees, not for this year (2016). Please send it in when you can. If you need to work out a payment plan, please let me know. Checks are payable to ABOB, or you can pay it online by clicking here
