Band Update – 10/24/16

Hello!

Congratulations on a fantastic finale to the marching season! The 100 pushed all the way to the end, giving one of the best runs of the year Saturday night, winning crowd favorite, 2nd place in class, and 3rd place for the day (out of 29 bands)! Congratulations 100! I speak for the entire staff when I say we are so proud of the kids, and really can see the growth the kids have made throughout this season. Now we keep pushing forward!

Also, on a personal note THANK YOU so much to those who helped/donated/attended the “surprise onesie shower” for Eric and me on Thursday night. I had NO IDEA what was planned, and Eric and I had a great time! The porch swing will be fantastic at our new house, and we feel so loved. We do consider you and your kids family… thank you, thank you, thank you!

Here’s what we have going on this week:

  • Concert Band Auditions begin today! The music students can prepare (scales and etude) went out earlier in the month. Please encourage at home practice – all students audition this week!
  • ABOB Meeting – Tonight, Monday, 10/24 – 7pm, AHS Band Room
  • We are kicking off another Trip Fundraiser today – Heavy Duty Trash Bags! Students received a sample trash bag and an order form today. Sale dates are 10/24 -11/7. Orders to be turned in 11/7 with delivery the following Monday (11/14). Feel free to email Macie Henkhaus with any questions henkn99@gmail.com
  • Bandquet – Friday, 10/28 – 6-11pm, AHS Commons. Invites have gone out, RSVPs are PAST DUE! If you still need to get one in, please send it in ASAP!

    • RSVPs can be turned into me or Mr. James – make checks (for guest meals) payable to ABOB. Please have the RSVP’s in by the end of the week. Thanks!

Looking ahead:

  • Halloween Parade – Monday, 10/31. We will follow this schedule:
    • 6:00pm – Arrive Alton High, put on uniforms, grab instruments, load buses
    • 6:45pm – Depart Alton High
    • 7pm – Arrive at police station, warm up, stage
    • 7:30pm – Parade Begins
    • 9pm – Finish parade, load up, depart for AHS
    • 9:15pm – Arrive AHS, unload, change out of uniform
  • Lovejoy Music Festival – AHS Jazz Band – Thursday, Nov. 3, 7pm, Lovejoy Elementary. More info. TBA
  • IMEA District VI Festival – Select students – Saturday, November 5, Edwardsville High School. More info. TBA
  • IMEA District VI Jazz Festival – Select students – Saturday, November 12, Belleville East High School. More info. TBA
  • Fall Orchestra Concert (Fine Arts Critique Opportunity) – Thursday, November 17, 7pm, AHS Auditorium
  • Cudney/Overmann Wedding – Saturday, November 19, 2pm. The rumors are true… the kids are indeed playing at the ceremony! All band kids are invited – we will take buses down, play (wearing uniforms), have a pizza party, then head back home. Time will be around 11am – 5pm.
    • This is a totally optional event – if your student can/wants to come, great! If not, no problem at all.
    • At some point, I will need to know for sure whether or not your student plans on attending (bus plans/pizza count/etc.) I don’t need an email – we’ll just ask in class. Please discuss at home if your student is planning on coming!
  • Just to confirm, we will NOT be participating in the St. Louis Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. You can mark that off the calendar and enjoy the holiday. 🙂
  • It is time to start thinking about Pep Band (Redbird Rhythm). All band students are involved in pep band – we divide the bands up into two groups, a Red Band and a Gray Band. We will post the groups in the band room this week. Here is the schedule:
    • Practices (Everyone): Tuesday, 11/29 – 3:25 – 4:15pm
      Tuesday, 12/6 – 6:15pm
    • Games: Red Band:
      • Tuesday, 12/6 – 6:45pm
      • Friday, 12/9 – 6:45pm
      • Friday, 2/3 – 6:45pm
      • Tuesday, 2/21 – 6:45pm
    • Games: Gray Band:
      • Tuesday, 12/6 – 6:45pm
      • Friday, 1/13 – 6:45pm
      • Friday, 2/10 – 6:45pm
      • Friday, 2/24 – 6:45pm
    • Pep Band is a graded activity (25 points for each game/rehearsal). Students who may need to miss a game can attend the other band’s game for extra credit – any extra game a student attends is worth 25 extra credit points.

Here’s what else is going on:

  • We sent out an email about Trip Fundraisers, and the calendar fundraiser continues!!! If you missed it, you can find the information here – Nashville Trip Fundraisers
  • I sent an email out to those who have not yet paid the $50 Band Fees for this year. If you paid them at registration, that was for last year (2015)’s fees, not for this year (2016). Please send it in when you can. If you need to work out a payment plan, please let me know. Checks are payable to ABOB, or you can pay it online by clicking here
